Jamung: On 'Sharpening The Axe'

~ Konvokesyen UUM Ke-22 : 05/10/2009 ~
Since graduation, only recently Solehah's eldest brother (Abang Mat) agreed to further his studies - postgraduate study ... alhamdulillah. It is a good move as he is 'back' single & still jobless (not permanently employed). He is very serious & started applying but till now 'belum ada rezeki'.
The idea of furthering studies came as we believe that we must improve our knowledge (past, recent or future). No matter in what field (medical, statistic, education, ict, etc), we must consistently further our studies. Below is a related story by A. Beuregard (couldn't remember in detail):
Once upon a time there was a woodcutter who got a job in a timber merchant. The boss gave him an axe & showed the area where he was suppose to work. The first day, he brought 20 trees. "Congratulations," the boss said. Being motivated, he tried harder the next day but he only could bring 15 trees . The third day he tried even harder but he brought only 10 trees. Day after day he was bringing less and less trees. He thought he was losing his strength. He apologized & told the boss that he could not understand what was going on.
"When was the last time you sharpened your axe?", the boss asked. "Sharpen? I had no time. I have been very busy trying to cut trees."
A man who graduates today
and stops learning tomorrow is uneducated the day after.
Catatan:
1. Doing revision on past knowledge is also part of learning. Past knowledge might be useful the following days.
2. Doakan agar Abang Mat berjaya melanjutkan pelajaran.
